Think of the redesigned 2012 Audi A6 as an Audi A7 for the corner-office crowd.

While the audaciously styled four-passenger A7 boasts a head-swiveling fastback body, the new five-passenger A6, mechanically joined at the hip to A7, presents a more grown-up demeanor.

A7 wears disco duds. A6 wears a business suit. Kudos to the tailor.

Available as the turbocharged, four-cylinder, front-drive 2.0T or the supercharged, V-6, all-wheel drive 3.0T we sampled, A6 shows a face highlighted by the trademark Audi gape-mouth grille — a matter of taste — and marvelous, raptor-eye headlights, both shared with A7. Aft of the A-pillar, however, 6 gets conservatively buttoned-down with clean flanks, a back-on-its-haunches cabin and a sculpted rump with a striking license-plate overhang.

The first images of the 2012 Mercedes Benz SL-class have made their way onto the internet. While the images don’t reveal much of the new model, the new SL-class is said of have lost as much as 140 kg in weight over the current model.

The transmission is a ditherer when you need to drive assertively. Shifts can be syrupy or abrupt, even in the Sport setting. In the manual paddle-shift mode, the gearbox often downshifts unpredictably, unbidden by the driver’s hand.

Power comes in the form of a 1.8-litre 16-valve turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. Performance numbers indicate 201 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 229 ft.-lb. of torque at 2,300-4,300 rpm.

Matched to a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, 0-100 km/h takes 7.2 seconds. Top speed for this rear wheel drive coupe is rated at 210 km/h, but this is due mainly to factory settings limiting the top end.

All new for 2012 the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is an entry-level luxury compact hard-top roadster powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 302 hp, for a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds. RWD paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission enables the SLK350 to achieve an EPA estimated 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Features include 18-inch wheels, interior wood trim, LED daytime running lamps, panorama sunroof, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, heated seats, keyless start, leather seats, 8-way power sports seats, heated power side mirrors, surround sound system, 6-disc DVD/CD changer, 8-speaker audio system, navigation system, and HD radio. Safety is comprised of electronic stability program, adaptive brakes, attention assist, 8-way airbag protection, anti-lock braking, brake assist, emergency tensioning devices, and advanced tire pressure monitoring. The SLK is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster has received a substantial makeover for 2012, with reworked powertrains and more masculine sheetmetal. The SLK350's new 3.5-liter V6 helps back up that fresh dose of manliness with 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, thanks to the addition of direct injection. Having driven the roadster, we found the upgrades help make the car more entertaining to drive, and now we can put a price tag on these refinements.


Mercedes-Benz has announced that the 2012 SLK350 will start at $55,675 (*including $875 in destination charges). That's a $1,500 increase over the 2011 model – a fair shake considering the updates. For comparison's sake, the folding hardtop SLK350 carries an MSRP that's $4,800 more than the Audi TTS Roadster and $950 more than the BMW Z4 sDrive35i. It does, however, continue to price out lower than the similarly powered Porsche Boxster S, which starts at $58,600. The SLK350 goes on sale on June 1.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class to lose 140kg

Details of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Cass have been leaked in Germany, including some interesting images of the new aluminium body and chassis.

Mercedes-Benz is striving to achieve not only improved performance but also enhanced handling agility and fuel consumption with the upcoming SL-Class. Seen here are images of the chassis and body which use an extensive aluminium construction.

Fuel consumption and acceleration times are expected to drop as a result, with fuel efficiency improving by 30 per cent compared with the current range.

So it’s about time Mercedes reveals the car’s pricing details. The base car costs 115,430 euros, which is a lot even by AMG standards. But then AMG Black Series cars are all very special.
